Celebration of Canadian Music

Purchase Tickets
Special all day programming will bring to life a fantastic variety of 19th-century song, dance and instrumental music. Tune in to music performed, consumed and composed in pre-confederation Canada, take part in an old-fashioned singing school and try your hand (and feet!) at a 19th century dance.

9:30 AM – 5:00 PM Hands-on Music Try out a barrel organ, period percussion instruments or a singing game.
10:00 – 10:30 AM Les Chansons Populaires du Canada Explore Ernest Gagnon’s 1865 collection of traditional songs.
10:30 – 11:00 AM Follow the Fiddle! Trace violin tunes & techniques as they travel across territory & time in this workshop/concert.
11:00 – 11:30 AM Classical Music In Canada Join us to hear and learn about the classical music that was played in Canada in the 1800s.
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Rise Up Traditional Dancers Learn about Mohawk Social Dances, and try it out for yourself!
12:00 – 12:30 PM Travelling Tiltons Show Witness this world renowned (and ever so popular) ensemble as they offer a modest sample of popular music from the past.
12:30 – 1:30 PM Gillan Rutz Listen and sing along with Gillan as he recounts the early days of logging in the Ottawa Valley through song.
1:30 – 2:30 PM Rise Up Traditional Dancers Learn about Mohawk Social Dances and try it out for yourself!
2:00 – 2:30 PM 100th Regiment Fife and Drum Corps Learn about the historical aspects of the drum and fife, their origins, and the music they played in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
2:30 – 3:30 PM Brass Band Concert Soak in the sounds of seven saxhorns playing arrangements of pre-confederation Canadian compositions and brass band music.
3:30 – 4:30 PM Ross Farm Dance Join us for a 1860s dance and music!

Who Will Be Performing?

Gillan Rutz
Gillan Rutz has been singing and storytelling in the Ottawa Valley since 1972. His wide array of early valley life especially amongst residents visitors, museums and tourists keep him very busy…throughout the year. Earlier this year he received the King Charles medal for his contribution to preserving history and culture.
He looks forward to joining the visitors to Upper Canada Village in August.

The 100th Regiment Fire and Drum Corps
Based in Ottawa and consists of volunteers representing the field musicians of the regiment. They bring the 100th Regiment to life performing music and drill while dressed and equipped in a manner that reflects the original unit as it would have appeared during the summer of 1813. In 1818, members of the regiment received grants of land establishing the Village of Richmond which is now part of the City of Ottawa.
