As one of the largest living-history museums in Canada, Upper Canada Village invites guests to step back in time to 1866 and experience rural village life. The arrival of spring and Queen Victoria’s birthday were both reasons to celebrate in Canadian communities in the 1860’s. The Queen's Birthday was widely recognized as an important national holiday by the 1860's. In rural Upper Canada, livestock such as sheep were important for many families. Sheep were relatively easy to care for, grazing in pastures in the summer and hay in the winter. Sheep were beneficial in many ways. There wool could be used to create clothing and textiles, sheep not needed for herd development could be sold or used as meat, and the manure was vital in maintaining soil for crops. The sensory accommodations will include schedule and itinerary suggestions, quiet spaces, hands-on opportunities and gentle social interactions with Village staff.

Friday, August 1st, 2025 Join us at Upper Canada Village for a day of reflection, education, and celebration of Emancipation Day. This significant event commemorates the historic abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834 and honours the enduring journey towards resilience and triumphs of Black communities, and equality and justice.
